The Mandalorian Will Have A Panel at Star Wars Celebration Chicago

22 Mar, 2019

Disney and Lucasfilm have confirmed that The Mandalorian will have a panel at Star Wars Celebration Chicago in April. It promises to be a big year for a galaxy far, far away, between the conclusion of the Skywalker Saga in this December's Star Wars: Episode IX and The Mandalorian launching on the Disney Plus streaming service this fall. The latter, of course, is the first live-action Star Wars TV series ever produced and is being overseen by a team that includes actor-filmmaker Jon Favreau (Iron Man, The Jungle Book) as the head executive producer and writer.

While story details for The Mandalorian are mostly under lock and key at the moment, it has been confirmed that the series will take place between the second and third Star Wars movie trilogies (e.g. after Return of the Jedi, but before The Force Awakens). It will further shift the setting away from the New Republic and the core planets to the outer reaches of the Star Wars galaxy, where life is pretty lawless in general. Fortunately, fans shouldn't have to wait much longer to get their first look at the show itself.

StarWars.com has confirmed that The Mandalorian will have a panel at this year's Star Wars Celebration in Chicago (which will run from April 11-15 at McCormick Place). The panel will take place on Sunday, April 14 at 11 a.m. live on the Celebration Stage and presented at the same time in the Galaxy and Twin Suns Stages. Favreau will be accompanied at the event by Dave Filoni, who's been overseeing all Lucasfilm Animation projects (including, the currently-ongoing Disney XD series Star Wars Resistance) since 2016, and called the shots on The Mandalorian's pilot episode.

There's no mention of The Mandalorian's first-look footage premiering at Star Wars Celebration in the announcement, but it feels like a foregone conclusion at this point. The series officially wrapped production at the end of February, so there should be enough finished material for a teaser (at least). Moreover, Disney and Lucasfilm have a lot riding on the show's success and will want to start generating some proper hype all the sooner for it. Fortunately, Star Wars Celebration is the perfect place for the two corporations to get the ball rolling on the show's marketing, both in terms of timing and the enthusiastic reception that it's guaranteed to get from those attending the series' panel.

It certainly helps that The Mandalorian sounds promising on paper, between its premise, cast, and equally noteworthy production team. Case in point: fan-favorite Pedro Pascal (Triple Frontier) is starring as the TV show's namesake and is supported by a cast that includes names like Gina Carano (Deadpool), Nick Nolte (Warrior), filmmaker Werner Herzog, and Apollo Creed himself, Carl Weathers. Meanwhile, the series was directed by acclaimed filmmakers Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok) and Rick Famuyiwa (Dope), in addition to actor-director Bryce Dallas Howard, Deborah Chow (Jessica Jones), and Filoni. All in all, The Mandalorian would be something to watch out for, even if it wasn't part of the Star Wars franchise.
