Agents of SHIELD Season 6 Cast Photo: Not-Coulson Lurks, Fitz Returns

Marvel releases the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 6 cast photo, featuring the return of Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Clark Gregg's new character. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5 concluded last May after a year that sent the team to the future, and to space. The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5 finale saw agents save the world from Graviton, but they were unable to save their leader, Phil Coulson (Gregg), or fellow team member Leo Fitz. Coulson lived out the rest of his days until his fatal injury from The Avengers eventually killed him - again - off screen, and while Fitz died, the remaining agents set out to rescue a past version of Fitz from space.

As a result, the team is going to look a little different at the start of season 6. Fitz won't be around, Mack is the new S.H.I.E.L.D. director, Deke has joined the team and Daisy and May are still processing their grief for Coulson. However, the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 6 trailer confirmed Gregg will return in some form, though the exact nature of his role is unclear. Gregg himself teased he's playing "Not Phil Coulson," but fans can only speculate what exactly that means. Still, fans are eagerly looking forward to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 6 after its year-long hiatus and now Marvel further teases the show's return.

Producer Geoffrey Colo released a new photo of the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 6 cast, which can be viewed below. The image sees all the major cast members standing around a table, seemingly recreating Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper. From left to right, the photo includes Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen), Gregg's mysterious character, Elena "Yo-Yo" Rodriguez (Natalia Cordova-Buckley), Alphonso "Mack" MacKenzie (Henry Simmons), Daisy Johnson (Chloe Bennet), Leo Fitz, Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) and Deke Shaw (Jeff Ward). In addition to the photo, EW reports Lou Diamond Phillips will direct the fifth episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 6, reteaming with his Stargate Universe co-star Wen. Phillips joins fellow season 6 directors that include Gregg, who helmed an episode of season 5 and the season 6 premiere. Phillips said of directing an Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episode:

I got the call when I was directing Fear of the Walking Dead down in Austin: ‘Would you direct an episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.?’ ‘Yeah, done.’ Instant answer, because of the world, because it’s Marvel. It’s big. It’s comic-book stuff. It’s action. It’s mythology. It’s science-fiction. It’s all of that rolled into one. And of course my old friend Ming-Na was on it. That’s crazy, that’s wonderful!

ABC hasn't yet announced when Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 6 will premiere, though it has been confirmed the show will return in May after about a year-long hiatus. It's likely the cast will reveal the premiere date at the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. WonderCon panel this weekend. After all, the panel will screen the entire season 6 premiere episode for attendees, so even those not able to get into the panel will have something to look forward to out of the convention.

Until a premiere date is announced, fans can take heart in the fact that Marvel and ABC are kicking promotion of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 6 into high gear. Of course, it still remains to be seen if Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will tie into the MCU movies, especially considering Avengers: Endgame hits theaters just before the show returns. However, even if the series stays mostly separate, fans are looking forward to the return of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and seeing what's next for the agents.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 6 premieres May 2019 on ABC.
