Game of Thrones Season 8 Poster Turns Drogon Into The Iron Throne
22 Mar, 2019
HBO has released a poster for Game of Thrones season 8 that transforms Drogon into the Iron Throne. The network's hit adaptation of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire fantasy novels will begin airing its final six episodes in mid-April, almost exactly eight years after the show premiered back in the spring of 2011. Of course, four of the series' final half-dozen episodes will be super-sized, as part of showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss' efforts to take their time and bring the fantasy saga to a satisfying conclusion (not to mention, avoid rushing things the way they've long been criticized for doing in season 7).
Naturally, HBO is keen to maintain a lid on spoilers for season 8 as long as possible; even Martin doesn't know exactly how Game of Thrones will end, now that the show has long eclipsed his published books. The Game of Thrones season 8 full-length trailer likewise dances around giving away too many important plot points, other than what fans already knowing going in (namely, there will be a big showdown between the living and the Night King's Army of the Dead). Something similar could be said for the season's newly released one-sheet, too.
HBO released the Game of Thrones season 8 poster online today, via the show's social media accounts. As you can see, it shows Daenerys Targaryen's dragon Drogon (who serves as Daeny's personal mount whenever she flies somewhere) transforming into the Iron Throne.
While Drogon being the one who ultimately "wins" the Game of Thrones and sits on the Iron Throne would be quite the twist ending, we're going to go out on a limb here and assume that's not what this poster is foreshadowing. At the same time, the one-sheet could be hinting that someone who either controls a dragon and/or will do so in season 8 will end up taking the Throne and ruling Westeros from King's Landing. This wouldn't necessarily mean that Daenerys is the one who'll "win" the Iron Throne, either. After all, both her lover (and, as she'll soon find out, her nephew) Jon Snow and her adviser Tyrion Lannister have been able to approach Daeny's dragons without incurring their wrath in the past, and it's heavily speculated that one or both of them will catch a ride on a dragon solo, at some point during season 8. The Night King also controls Viserion now, but even a series as dark as Game of Thrones is highly unlikely to end with its big bad succeeding at their quest.
For the time being, fans will have to make due theorizing about season 8 and trying to guess what surprises Benioff and Weiss have up their sleeves with their Game of Thrones finale. Fortunately, there are a whole lot of questions - ranging from how Jon will prove his Targaryen lineage to whether characters like Petyr Baelish (aka. Littlefinger) are really as dead as they seem to be - for everyone to consider between now and the show's return next month. And in a way, the question of who will ultimately secure the Iron Throne is the least interesting one right now.
Game of Thrones season 8 premieres Sunday, April 14 on HBO.
